Kathmandu to Lhasa (Tibet) Entry Via Road

All overland tours from Kathmandu to Lhasa must go through the recently opened Gyirong Port (Kyirong). It is the newest overland border crossing checkpoint for Tibet.   • Passport

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. Make sure your passport has at least two blank visa pages. This is important for entry and exit stamps, as well as for visas issued on arrival.

    You can either pre-process your Nepalese Visa at the Nepalese embassy in your country or get a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, or any land borders from India or China. Be sure to apply for a multi-entry Nepalese visa since you'll be traveling through Kathmandu more than once during your tour. The cost is $25 USD for the re-entry facility, allowing you to leave and re-enter Nepal multiple times during your visa's validity.
  • Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)
    To enter or explore Tibet, you need a mandatory Tibet Travel Permit (TTP). To apply, you must have a valid passport and Chinese Visa, and the application can only be done through registered tour operators. Individuals cannot apply on their own. It's best to apply 2-3 weeks before your trip to ensure the permit arrives on time.
  • Chinese Visa
    To enter China or Tibet, you need a Chinese Visa, which cannot be obtained on arrival. You must apply for it at the Chinese Embassy in your home country before traveling. If you start your Tibet trip from Kathmandu, you can get a Tibet Group Visa (China visa) at the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu. This process takes 4 working days and requires your original passport.
