Tibet

  • Tibet is known as the roof of the world. You will enjoy an extensive tour of Lhasa during your time in Tibet. Lhasa is the capital of Tibet. It is situated 3,656 meters above sea level. Traveling from Kathmandu to Lhasa is a huge gain in elevation. Therefore, travelers are recommended to take it easy on their arrival day and have lots of water and soups to acclimate.

  • The Potala Palace is one of the main attractions in Lhasa. It was built in the 7th century and has long served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lama. The palace presents an iconic traditional Tibetan architecture and houses thousands of murals, scriptures, and Buddhist relics. Likewise, Norbulingka is another great palace and man-made garden in Lhasa. It used to be the summer residence of the Dalai Lama. This structure dates back to the 18th century and offers a fantastic retreat from the bustle of Lhasa.

  • Likewise, Jokhang Temple is another popular tourist site in Lhasa. It is called the spiritual heart of Tibet because hundreds of pilgrims visit this temple to get blessed and perform Kora. The temple was established in the 7th century. It features an immaculate blend of Tibetan, Indian, and Nepalese architecture. The Barkhor Market surrounds this temple. You will have a great time exploring the souvenir shops, cafes, and local eateries here.

  • Finally, you will also explore the three great Gelugpa monastic universities of Tibet—Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery, and Ganden Monastery. These are the three most prestigious monastic education institutions in Tibet. The monasteries boast incredible Tibetan architecture, art, and craftsmanship. FYI: The famous debate sessions among the monks take place in the Sera Monastery.

The best time for an 18-day Nepal-Tibet-Bhutan tour is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. Autumn, on the other hand, boasts dry trails and crystal-clear views of the Himalayan peaks, particularly in Nepal. It also coincides with major festivities like Dashain and Tihar in Nepal and Thimphu Tshechu in Bhutan, enriching the experience with colorful celebrations. Tibet enjoys calm and sunny days in autumn, allowing for peaceful exploration of monasteries and lakes. These seasons avoid the challenges of summer monsoons, which can disrupt travel, and the cold, harsh winters in Tibet. By choosing spring or autumn, travelers can enjoy pleasant weather, stunning landscapes, and an unforgettable cultural experience across these Himalayan regions.
